Do you know that Shreya is an accomplished Kathak dancer and is a graduate of the famous Lady Shri Ram College? Read all about Shreya’s journey from Haridwar to being the most sought after heroine in Tamil and Telugu cinema.

Overnight, Shreya Saran has become one of the most recognizable faces in Tamil Nadu. However, there is more to Shreya than a pretty face. She is an accomplished Kathak dancer who has trained under the famous danseuse Shobha Narayan. Her father is an official in a PSU and her mother is a teacher. Shreya is an alumnus of the Delhi Public School and the reputed Lady Shri Ram College from where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. After college, Shreya embarked on a modeling career where she endorsed brands like Head and Shoulders, Lux etc. The lure of the arc lights and greasepaint however proved too strong for Shreya to resist.

It was Telugu cinema which gave Shreya her first break. The movie “Ishtam” enjoyed an average run at the box office but gave Shreya instant visibility. Her first movie that paved the way for her major break in Telugu, the movie “Santosham” where she starred opposite Nagarjuna. The movie was a major blockbuster and firmly established Shreya as a heroine to watch out for. She also starred in several big ticket projects in Telugu cinema with all the major heroes including the reigning Megastar Chiranjeevi. Her string of hits included “Nuuve, Nuuve”, “Tagore” and “Bhageeratha”. By now Shreya was one of the major heroines in the Telugu film industry. By 2003 Shreya started eyeing the lucrative Tamil film industry.

As in Telugu, her first Tamil movie “Ennakku 20, Unnakku 18” enjoyed a mediocre run at the box office. The movie was known better for its mellifluous music composed by the maestro AR Rehman rather than histrionics. Shreya then took a sabbatical for a year from Tamil cinema during which she concentrated on her booming career in the Telugu film industry. The movie “Mazhai” in Tamil opposite newcomer Ravi after a year did well in the box office giving Shreya her first commercial success in Tamil. However, as in Telugu, Shreya got her big break when she was selected by director Shankar over several aspiring actresses as the female lead for his project “Sivaji” starring with the reigning superstar Rajnikanth.

Apart from movies, Shreya also devotes her time to philanthropy. She is associated with the Naandi foundation and SACH. Education of financially disadvantaged children is another cause close to her heart.

Is Shreya Saran a flash in the pan? Are her movies hits solely because she only acts opposite established stars in Tamil and Telugu? What do you feel? Post your comments.
