A sore throat or pharyngitis affects everyone some time or the other. Imagine the frustration when you have to use sign language and others cannot understand what you have to say! Though not really a serious issue, wouldn’t it make sense to try home remedies, get rid of it and get on with life as quickly as possible?
Causes and symptoms
You can get pharyngitis, an inflammation of the throat after a bout of flu, common cold or due to seasonal allergies, pollutants such as dust, household cleaners and smoke. Swallowing could be painful and your throat may be itchy and swollen.
Your physician could prescribe antibiotics; you can however try some traditional remedies. Could save a good deal of time and money too.
Try these home remedies:
Gargle with salt water twice a day. You could even try gargling with a pinch of turmeric in warm water as turmeric is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
A glass of warm water with a tablespoon of honey and lime could offer some relief as honey has antiseptic properties and lime helps keep the virus in check.
Add holy basil (tulsi), ginger, coriander seeds, pepper and jaggery to boiling water and let stand for a while. This herbal concoction is a guaranteed way to cure a sore throat.
Licorice, also known as yashti-madhu is known to have immuno-stimulant properties. Sipping licorice tea helps clear mucus. Steep a teaspoon of licorice root in hot water for 3 minutes before sipping. However pregnant women and people with diabetes and high blood pressure should avoid taking licorice.
Add a pinch of turmeric to a glass of warm milk and drink before going to bed; your sore throat will vanish by morning.
