Planning to travel around the world? How do you plan to manage your finances?

If you plan your trip ahead of time, it is more likely that you will have a wonderful time! While on vacation, all you want to do is relax and enjoy yourself – you don’t want to be stuck making plans for the day or looking into money matters.

Managing your money is an important aspect of planning a long trip and making it successful. Here are a few pointers you may find useful in planning your finances:
  • Choose your destinations and the time you would like to spend at each location. Talk to others who have traveled to these destinations to get an idea about the average daily expenditure on food, sightseeing, hotels and such. Your travel agent can guide you on the general costs you may incur on the trip. TV channels also give a lot of information these days.

  • After you have a fair idea of expenses, gather information on the currencies and exchange rates in the various countries you plan to visit.

  • Find out where credit cards or travelers’ checks are accepted and where cash is preferred. This will help you decide how much hard cash you need to carry on yourself.

  • Keep cash transaction to a minimum! Not only is it safe but also easier to keep track of expenses.

  • Carry travelers’ checks and credit cards with you. Holding a savings account with an international bank is advisable.

  • Decide on a budget for expenditures. That way you won’t have to worry about spending too much or too little.

  • Write down your budget on a piece of paper – don’t plan in the air! A quick reference to your budget will assure you if you are on track money-wise.
