History of Rakhi
Raksha Bandhan, a Hindu festival celebrated with much fervour symbolizes the unconditional love between a brother and a sister. While the customs and traditions associated with the festival has undergone several changes over the years, Raksha Bandhan has a legend to it. It is believed that Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna as to how he could protect himself from evils in the coming year. And the Lord asked him to observe the Rakshaa Ceremony. To make things easier to understand he narrated a story of Lord Indra. Lord Indra was defeated by Demons in a battle. And a worried Indra took the advise of Brihaspati, the Guru of Gods who asked him not to worry and take on the mighty demon on the auspicious day of Shraavana Poornima. On this day Indra’s wife  Shachee Devi accompanied by Brihaspati tied Raakhi, a talisman around Indra's right-wrist. Subsequently Indra was able to easily defeat the demon.
It is believed that the sacred thread or Rakhi, the talisman safeguarded Indra from all dangers. Reason why the festival came to be known as Raksha Bandhan – Raksha meaning protection and Bandhan signifying a bond.
