When is Rakhi celebrated?
Rakhi, the festival that symbolizes the unconditional love and affected between a brother and sister falls on the full moon day of the holy month of Shravana, which is the fifth month on the Hindu calendar.
So Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on 5th August 2009. On this day, as per Hindu tradition a sister ties a sacred thread called Rakhi, a symbol of love and affection on the wrist of her brother. How is Raksha Bandhan celebrated?
Raksha Bandhan celebrations start at dawn itself. Most individuals wake up early, take a bath and get ready for a puja. After the puja, sisters get set to tie the sacred thread on the wrists of their brothers.
An aarti is performed and tilak mixed with grains of rice particles is applied on the brother’s forehead amid chanting of mantras. Sweets are offered and the brother in turn promises to protect his sister from all evils of life. He also gives her a gift. Rakhi is celebrated with much pomp and enthusiasm by Hindus all over the world.
